Eve's Proposal

A few Sundays ago, Eve came to get me from Relief Society bursting with news, "Luke just asked me to marry him!"
"Oh?" I said. "What did you tell him?"
"I told him he had to go on a mission first" she giggled.

Later, Eve's Primary teacher told me that she was setting up her lesson and when she turned around, Luke was down on his knees in front of Eve (and the rest of the class) pleading with Eve to marry him.

To Eve's response, Luke said, "Please, please...but it would be Forever!"

Luke is a darling precocious boy a year older than Eve in school. I admire his guts to do what he did. Eve just giggles whenever he's around.

Hyrum: Mr. Singles Ward

Last Sunday we attended a singles ward (I was playing violin with a trio for my friend who was going on her mission). Following the meeting the Bishop opened up the time for announcements (time for the auxiliary leaders to announce their activities for the week). One of the announcements was for a "Holidate" (an arranged dinner date). The girl who announced this explained to the congregation that they needed more guys to sign up so all the girls who wanted to go would have a date.

Hyrum tugged on my sleeve and said (not too quietly) "Hey! I'm a guy. Can I go on that Holidate?" All the single girls in the vicinity turned to look at him and "awed". The girl in front of us turned around, smiled and said, "I'd love to go with you!"

How ironic that Hyrum, the boy who for his Primary talk just weeks before, spoke of service. He surprised us all by adding things to his talk that we had not planned. For example:

"Service is when someone doesn't have a friend, you make friends with them and help them with math."

Or "When someone is stuck in a cave and afraid you give them a hug."

And my favorite, "When someone doesn't have anyone to marry, you marry them."

Messy Marilyn

Our dear little Marilyn is a bit of a messy girl. She is consistently trying to get into or up turn whatever she can reach. She is very determined and will not stop until she gets what she wants. She likes messes. Here are a few examples.

We love our Mari. We have started to call her "Mari the Bulldozing Fairy."

Eve's Service Birthday

We have a tradition in our family (inspired by Aunt Kimberly). On each "special" birthday (8, 12, 16) the kids are given a choice to host a "service project" birthday party. Before the party, the birthday child chooses a service project based on a need he/she sees in the community. They then organize their party based around this need. Instead of bringing gifts for the birthday child, friends bring donations for the project. We also do a craft to donate.

This was Eve's 8th. She chose to collect supplies for a new school for kids with special needs. Eve wants to be a special needs teacher when she grows up. She has many friends with disabilites and loves to help them. At the party her friends had fun tying blankets to donate to the school. Everyone had fun (especially Eve). The joy of service has touched her heart!

Swine Flu, We Caught It

Mari has Swine Flu. Yes. We took her to the doctor for an ear infection and they think she has swine flu too. (The doctor told mom they're not testing for it because so many people have it. Mari had all the symptoms, so I guess that's all they needed to know. I (Emma) had it first, then Hammer got it and Mom's case mostly ended yesterday. Hammer and I, we both thought it was a BAD cold and let it go. A few days of misery and we were fine. Then Mari caught it. Poor Mari is on 2 different kinds of meds. (One for ear infection and one for the flu) I hope Dad and Eve don't get it.

Tomatoes and Peaches all day long!
I couldn't have done it without faithful Eve, Sweet Emma, and 2 of Emma's friends, and Cousins Jaron and Jacob (to play with Hyrum and Mari). Thanks everyone!

Lagoon 2009

Okay, so this picture needs an explanation. I was tricked! It was 8:00 p.m. It was getting cold and windy. We were riding our last favorite rides when Ben and Emma decided that I needed to go on just one more "really great, super fun, amazing ride". I love rides of all kinds and didn't think twice about which ride they wanted me to go on. Next thing I know, I'm sitting strapped to the "Cliff Hanger" ride. I began to wonder about this ride as I sat in a puddle. It was too late to turn back now. The ride was beginning to go up...and so were the fountains. I was right in the middle of the fountains. I leaned forward to avoid the water and got water down my back. I leaned back and got water down my front. That ride just wouldn't stop. I looked around and Emma and I were some of the only ones on this ride (no surprise since it was really cold outside). In the distance I could hear Ben laughing his famous laugh and out of my blurry eyes I could see him taking pictures as fast as he could. I couldn't believe this trick. By the time that awful ride ended I was freezing and soggy. Not a fun trick. Ben seemed to think otherwise. He and Emma couldn't stop laughing (mean!!!!!)

Everyone's all tuckered out (and still wet!)
